India distances itself from Swiss summit on Ukraine-Russia war, says ’conflict requires sincere, practical…’
India opted not to align with any communique at the Ukraine peace summit hosted by Switzerland, underscoring its commitment to engaging with all stakeholders for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Leaders from nearly 90 countries gathered in Switzerland to affirm their commitment to Ukraine’s “territorial integrity” on Sunday. Indian officials participated in the meeting, and the Ministry of External Affairs later reiterated India’s support for a peaceful and enduring resolution to the conflict. However, India chose not to align itself with any specific communique or document from the summit.
“The Indian delegation attended both the Opening and Closing Plenary Sessions of the Summit. India did not associate itself with any communique or document arising from the Summit. Our participation, along with preceding meetings at the NSA/Political Director level focused on Ukraine’s Peace Formula, reflects our consistent approach to promoting dialogue and diplomacy for a lasting and peaceful resolution to the conflict,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated.
The Ministry also emphasized the importance of “sincere and practical engagement” between Ukraine and Russia to address the significant European conflict since World War II. It reiterated India’s commitment to remain actively involved with all stakeholders and the parties involved, aiming to contribute to efforts for achieving a swift and sustainable peace.
The summit in Switzerland concluded over the weekend, with numerous countries expressing solidarity with Ukraine’s “territorial integrity” and advocating for inclusive dialogue among all parties to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict.
The recent events followed closely on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “very productive meeting” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the G-7 summit.
“India is keen to strengthen bilateral relations with Ukraine. Regarding the ongoing conflicts, India reaffirmed its commitment to a human-centric approach, emphasizing that dialogue and diplomacy are the pathways to peace,” he tweeted.
