Rahul Gandhi’s Rae Bareli Message Sets the Tone for Congress’ 2027 UP Assembly Campaign

In a clear and candid message to his party’s grassroots workers, Rae Bareli MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, laid down the framework for the Congress’ organisational strategy ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Addressing a closed-door meeting with booth-level workers at Dalmau in his constituency on April 29, Rahul made it clear that those committed to the party’s cause would play a decisive role, while those unwilling to contribute were free to leave.

Reiterating the themes of a speech he delivered at the Congress Working Committee meeting in Ahmedabad on April 8, Rahul Gandhi evoked applause as he spoke of categorising people, metaphorically, as three types of horses — racehorses, wedding horses, and limping horses. “Sometimes, the Congress sends a racehorse to a marriage procession and a wedding horse to a race. The time has come to fix this. The racehorse will run the race, the wedding horse will go to the wedding, and the limping horse — we’ll send that to the BJP. And as you can see, some have already gone,” he remarked, drawing cheers from the gathering.

Significantly, Gandhi also emphasised the importance of increasing women’s participation in the party structure. “We need to induct more women into our organisation. After all, women constitute 50% of the population,” he said, underlining the Congress’ ongoing Sangathan Srajan programme aimed at revitalising the party’s organisational strength in the state.

Rahul’s remarks come at a time when several senior Congress leaders, including former Union ministers, MPs, MLAs, and office bearers, have defected to the BJP over recent years. His message was a clear signal that the party’s future in Uttar Pradesh would now be built around dedicated grassroots workers rather than those seeking positions without effort.

Rae Bareli District Congress Committee president Pankaj Tiwari echoed the sentiment, saying, “Rahul Gandhi gave us a clear message — only those who work will lead the party into the 2027 elections, and those who don’t can leave. We’re adopting this approach as we rebuild the organisation.”

Amethi District Congress Committee president Pradeep Singhal added, “Though Rahul gave this message in Rae Bareli, we’re implementing it in Amethi too. Our organisational revamp will be completed in the next two to three months.”

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Ajay Rai described Gandhi’s message as a guiding force for party workers. “Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that those fighting for the party will be given prominence as we prepare for the 2027 polls. We’re actively involving such workers in our organisational efforts and ensuring they’re not sidelined. He’s shown the way, and we are following his lead,” Rai affirmed.

The meeting and its tone underline the Congress’ resolve to reclaim political ground in Uttar Pradesh by relying on loyal grassroots workers and weeding out inactive elements from its ranks ahead of a crucial election season.
