The BJP’s response to the Congress’s no-confidence motion against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has sparked a heated political exchange, with both parties digging in their heels. The BJP has continued to assert that this motion is part of a larger strategy to undermine Dhankhar, particularly by accusing him of being partisan as Rajya Sabha Chairperson. The party claims that the timing of the motion is too coincidental, coming right after the BJP raised concerns about the Gandhi family’s alleged connections with billionaire financier George Soros and his influence on Indian politics. Patra alleged that this was an attempt to distract from these more serious accusations by focusing on Dhankhar’s actions in the Rajya Sabha.
Further, the BJP has fiercely defended the Jat community, with Patra emphasizing that such a motion is an insult to the community, which has a long and proud history of patriotism and sacrifice. The BJP has claimed that the Congress’s actions are an affront not only to Dhankhar’s dignity but also to the Jat people, painting the Congress’s move as an attack on India’s democratic values.
On the other hand, the Congress continues to argue that the motion is a legitimate protest against Dhankhar’s handling of parliamentary affairs, claiming that his actions have shown a clear bias in favour of the ruling party. The Opposition’s 60 MPs, who submitted the notice for Dhankhar’s removal, have criticized him for allegedly silencing their voices and disrupting their participation in the Rajya Sabha. According to the Congress, this move is necessary to ensure that the country’s democratic institutions remain impartial and transparent.
While no Vice President in India’s history has been impeached, the controversy surrounding Dhankhar’s tenure has sparked intense debate over the role and conduct of the Vice President, especially as the country heads into a politically charged election cycle.
The BJP’s firm defence of Dhankhar and the Jat community, combined with the Congress’s call for greater accountability, has set the stage for an ongoing political battle. Both sides are likely to intensify their rhetoric as the debate unfolds, and the implications of this motion will reverberate beyond the Rajya Sabha, influencing public discourse and electoral campaigns in the months leading up to the 2024 general elections.
