The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), taking place from November 20 to 28 in Goa, is poised to be a grand celebration of cinema. It will bring together new and emerging talent while honoring the legacy of Indian film. With the theme ‘ Young Filmmakers—The Future is Now,’ the festival will highlight fresh voices in filmmaking and emphasize youth’s importance in shaping global cinema’s future.

Festival Director Shekhar Kapur, a renowned filmmaker with works such as Bandit Queen and Mr. India, unveiled the festival’s critical highlights at a curtain-raiser event in New Delhi. IFFI, a respected member of the International Competition Feature Film Festivals group, which includes Cannes, Berlin, and Venice, will showcase over 180 films from 81 countries. The festival will feature 15 world premieres, three international premieres, and a variety of Indian premieres, underscoring the diversity and innovation within global cinema.

The festival is set to be a game-changer, clearly focusing on emerging talent. The Creative Minds of Tomorrow initiative, aimed at nurturing the next generation of filmmakers, has been expanded to support 100 young talents, up from the previous 75. Shekhar Kapur’s leadership is seen as an essential milestone for IFFI, as he takes the reins of the festival, marking a shift where the industry leads the initiative. Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, praised the leadership change, stating, “The festival is now being run and led by the industry itself, with Shekhar Kapur at the helm. This is a new path for us and a milestone in the festival’s evolution.”

To support new talent, a Best Indian Debut Director Award will be introduced this year to celebrate exceptional Indian filmmakers.

To further engage the younger audience, IFFI 2024 will feature IFFiesta, an entertainment zone designed to provide a mix of live performances, food stalls, and cultural experiences. Set at the Riverfront near Kala Academy, IFFiesta is powered by District and Zomato and promises to offer an interactive space for young film enthusiasts.

The festival will also commemorate the centenary anniversaries of four legendary figures in Indian cinema: Raj Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, Tapan Sinha, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Special screenings of restored classics such as Awara (1951), Hum Dono (1961), Devadasu (1953), Saat Hindustani (1969), and Seemabaddha (1971) will be part of the tributes.

Australia has been selected as the Country of Focus for IFFI 2024, with a curated collection of Australian films and notable filmmakers attending. The United Kingdom will be featured as the Treaty Country, showcasing British cinema in collaboration with the British Film Institute.

In a further push to foster international collaboration, IFFI 2024 will also present a new section called Rising Stars, highlighting emerging filmmakers and Mission Life, a segment dedicated to eco-conscious cinema, reflecting the festival’s commitment to social and environmental issues.

For the first time, the festival will partner with Svayam to offer accessible programming for individuals with disabilities. All festival venues will be wheelchair accessible, and films will feature audio descriptions and sign language interpretation to ensure an inclusive experience for all attendees.

To bring cinema to more people, screenings will be held at six additional theatres across Goa, including new venues in Madgaon and Ponda. Inflatable theatres will also be set up at various locations for an immersive viewing experience.

Industry veterans such as AR Rahman, Shabana Azmi, Mani Ratnam, and Australian filmmaker Philip Noyce will lead over 25 masterclasses, offering aspiring filmmakers and artists invaluable insights.

The Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest film market, will also occur during the festival. It will offer a platform for over 350 film projects and enable filmmakers to connect with industry professionals and distributors.

With its diverse programming, focus on innovation, and commitment to supporting new talent, IFFI 2024 is set to be a landmark event in cinema.
