An Emotional Evening as Wankhede Unveils the Rohit Sharma Stand

Just moments before the official unveiling of a stand named in his honour at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, Rohit Sharma stepped off the stage to personally escort his parents and wife, Ritika. For Rohit, family has always been at the heart of every milestone, and this special occasion was no different — he wasn’t going to celebrate one of the biggest moments of his career without them by his side.

At the count of three, Rohit’s mother, Purnima, and father, Gurunath, joined Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in pressing the ceremonial buzzer, lighting up the stadium with fireworks as the Rohit Sharma Stand was officially inaugurated. Amidst the cheers, Ritika, overwhelmed with emotion, quietly tried to shield her teary eyes behind her father-in-law — but the cameras, and everyone present, noticed.

It was a profoundly emotional evening for Rohit and his family. The Indian cricket star choked up several times while delivering a heartfelt speech before the unveiling, recalling the sacrifices his parents made to turn his childhood dream into reality. His parents, too, were in tears — “khushi ke aansoo” — as they watched their son stand tall at the ground where it all began.

“It’s going to be even more special having my family here — my parents, brother, and wife. I’m grateful for everything they’ve sacrificed for me,” Rohit shared at the ceremony organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association.

The occasion also saw other stalwarts being honoured — former India captain Ajit Wadekar and ex-BCCI president Sharad Pawar had stands named after them.

For Rohit, this was more than a personal achievement; it was the fulfilment of a childhood dream. “Growing up, I only ever dreamed of playing for Mumbai and for India. To now have my name alongside the legends of the game… I can’t express what this means to me,” he said, adding with a grin, “It’s even more special because I’m still playing — I’ve retired from two formats but one is still going.”

He also hinted at another wish yet to be realised. “It will be surreal to play here on the 21st for Mumbai Indians with this stand in my name. But even more special when I get to represent the country here again,” he added, expressing his desire to play an ODI at Wankhede.

The significance of Wankhede in Rohit’s journey wasn’t lost on him either. “This is where my cricketing dreams began. You try to chase a lot of milestones, but something like this is truly special,” he reflected.

Grateful for the gesture, he extended his thanks to Sharad Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis for making the day unforgettable. Yet, true to his professional instincts, Rohit soon switched focus, smiling as he noted, “My MI team’s waiting for me to finish my speech so they can start training.”

Among the many tributes, one of the most heartfelt came from his India and Mumbai Indians teammate Suryakumar Yadav. “From finisher to opener to our captain — you’ve been an inspiration in every role. You’ve changed not just the game, but the approach, the attitude, and the dressing room atmosphere. You deserve it all and more,” Suryakumar posted on Instagram, adding, “Wankhede just got even more iconic.”

Chief Minister Fadnavis, in his address, hinted at bigger things for Mumbai cricket too. “Our iconic batter, captain, and one of my favourites is here today. And if MCA sends us a proposal for a new stadium, we will allot the land to accommodate more fans,” he promised.

It was a day that wasn’t just about cricket, but about dreams, sacrifices, and the people who make those dreams possible — and no one embodied that better than Rohit Sharma and his family at Wankhede.
