PBKS Pull Off Historic Upset Against KKR, Chahal Shines in Record-Breaking Win
In one of the most dramatic matches in IPL history, Punjab Kings (PBKS) pulled off an astonishing victory, defending a mere 112 runs against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Chandigarh. On a night where the bowlers ruled, Yuzvendra Chahal delivered a masterclass in spin bowling, claiming 4 for 28 and proving once again that class is permanent.
Chahal’s fiery spell dismantled a KKR batting lineup that, at one stage, looked well on course for a routine win. Marco Jansen (3 for 17) provided crucial support, and the duo shared seven wickets to bowl out Kolkata for just 95, sealing Punjab’s lowest-ever defended total in IPL history and the lowest successful defense in the tournament’s history overall — a remarkable feat in a season where 200-plus scores have become the norm.
KKR appeared in control early in the chase, with Angkrish Raghuvanshi (37) and captain Ajinkya Rahane laying a solid foundation at 62/2. But Chahal flipped the script in the eighth over, removing both Rahane and Raghuvanshi, followed by Rinku Singh and Ramanpreet Singh in quick succession to trigger a dramatic collapse.
Despite a short-lived counterattack from Andre Russell (17), including two towering sixes and a boundary, Punjab’s bowlers remained composed. Arshdeep Singh (1 for 11) and Jansen cleaned up the tail, capping off an extraordinary comeback for a side still chasing its first IPL title.
Zinta’s Joy Goes Viral
PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta, known for her unwavering support, couldn’t contain her excitement. She leaped from her seat and rushed onto the field to congratulate the players and coaching staff. Her heartfelt celebration quickly went viral on social media, with fans praising her loyalty and passion.
Punjab’s emotional win not only boosted team morale but also catapulted them into the top four with eight points from six matches. Meanwhile, KKR slipped to sixth place with three wins and four defeats.
Notably, PBKS remains one of the three original IPL franchises — alongside Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru — yet to win a title since the league’s inception.
Captain Iyer Reflects on Gritty Victory
Speaking after the game, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer expressed pride in his team’s mindset and field placements, crediting instinct and unity for the memorable win.
“It’s hard to express in words. I was just backing my instincts. I saw the ball turn a bit, asked Yuzi to control his breathing and stay calm. We needed to be attacking, and everyone was in the right place at the right time. These kinds of wins are truly special,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation.
Next Challenge: RCB
Punjab Kings will next face Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday, aiming to carry forward the momentum from their historic win.
