Delhi Govt Forms Committee to Implement Welfare Schemes for Gig Workers

The Delhi government has established a committee to implement various welfare schemes for gig workers, fulfilling a key promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. As part of its initiatives, the committee will develop a portal to register gig workers operating in the national capital, according to officials familiar with the development.

A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the panel, consisting of bureaucrats, will strategize and oversee the implementation of these schemes.

“The committee’s priority is to create a registration portal for gig workers. Other welfare measures will follow in due course,” the official said.

BJP’s Gig Worker Welfare Promises

In its election manifesto, the “Sankalpa Patra,” the BJP pledged to establish a Gig Worker Welfare Board to provide benefits such as:

  • ₹10 lakh life insurance
  • ₹5 lakh accident insurance
  • Scholarships for gig workers’ children pursuing higher education
  • Vehicle insurance subsidies for gig workers

Gig workers, who typically take up short-term or project-based jobs as freelancers or independent contractors, include drivers of ride-sharing and taxi services, as well as food delivery personnel.

The committee will oversee the portal’s development, which will be handled by the IT department, while a separate team will collaborate with platforms and gig worker unions to ensure effective execution.

Other Recent Welfare Initiatives

The move follows the recent formation of a ministerial committee to finalize the implementation of the Mahila Samriddhi Scheme. On March 8, International Women’s Day, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the Delhi cabinet had approved a ₹5,100 crore annual budget to provide ₹2,500 financial assistance to women in the Capital.

A committee led by Gupta, with cabinet ministers Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, and Kapil Mishra, has been tasked with finalizing the scheme’s implementation.
