Air India Expands Codeshare with ANA, Shifts Japan Operations to Haneda Airport
In a significant move to enhance travel between India and Japan, Air India announced on Monday the expansion of its codeshare partnership with All Nippon Airways (ANA) and the relocation of its Japan operations from Narita International Airport (NRT) to Haneda Airport (HND), which offers better connectivity to Tokyo.
Starting March 31, 2025, Air India will operate its four weekly flights from Delhi to Haneda Airport, replacing its current services to Narita. Haneda, located just 18 kilometers from downtown Tokyo, significantly reduces travel time compared to Narita, which is 70 kilometers away. This shift is expected to make travel more convenient for passengers heading to Tokyo and nearby regions.
Enhanced Connectivity: Air India-ANA Codeshare Expansion
Further strengthening its partnership with ANA, Air India has expanded its codeshare agreement to provide seamless connectivity across multiple Japanese cities.
According to the airline’s statement:
“Subject to regulatory approvals, from April 1, 2025, Air India will place its ‘AI’ designator code on ANA’s flights between Tokyo Haneda and six major Japanese cities: Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo. This will allow Air India passengers to book flights to these destinations on a single ticket, with baggage checked through the entire journey.”
Reciprocally, ANA will place its ‘NH’ code on Air India’s flights between Delhi and Haneda, as well as key Indian cities including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune.
This codeshare expansion follows the initial agreement signed in April 2024, marking a step toward stronger India-Japan air connectivity.
What is a Codeshare Partnership?
A codeshare agreement allows two airlines to sell seats on each other’s flights under a shared flight number. This enables passengers to book a single ticket for multiple destinations, ensuring smoother connections, baggage transfers, and greater flexibility in travel.
With these developments, Air India aims to streamline travel between India and Japan, offering enhanced connectivity, reduced travel time, and a more seamless flying experience for passengers.
