US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held high-level talks at the White House on Thursday, announcing a range of initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. The discussions followed Trump’s recent criticism of India’s business environment and remarks about imposing reciprocal tariffs on nations that apply duties on US imports.

Trump emphasized that India would significantly increase its purchases of US defense equipment, including advanced fighter jets, and could potentially make the US its top oil and gas supplier. Modi, in turn, set an ambitious goal of doubling trade with the US by 2030. The Prime Minister described his meeting with Trump as “excellent” and a major step forward in the relationship between the two countries.

Here are the key takeaways from the meeting:

Extradition of Tahawwur Rana: President Trump confirmed that his administration has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a key figure involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, to India. Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, is being held in a Los Angeles detention center and has strong ties to David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the attacks. Trump referred to Rana as “very evil” and emphasized the significance of bringing him to justice in India.

Strengthening Defense Cooperation: Both nations are committed to deepening their strategic defense partnership. Trump announced plans for the US to provide India with F-35 fighter jets, following extensive discussions with Modi on expanding collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, advanced technologies, and connectivity. Trump further revealed that military sales to India will increase by billions of dollars, starting this year, with the US working toward supplying advanced F-35 stealth fighter jets.

Energy Trade Expansion: Trump revealed a major deal positioning the US as a leading supplier of oil and gas to India. He pointed out that India’s steep tariffs, particularly on US goods like automobiles, have created a “major issue” in trade relations. Trump added that US oil and gas exports could help address India’s trade deficit. He praised Prime Minister Modi for agreeing, “in good faith,” to reduce India’s “unfair and extreme tariffs” on US goods, which Trump called a significant challenge.

Tackling Terrorism: Both leaders addressed the ongoing threat of “radical Islamic terrorism.” Modi thanked Trump for approving the extradition of Tahawwur Rana and expressed gratitude for the US’s unwavering support in combating terrorism. Modi emphasized that the fight against terrorism requires decisive actions and that the US and India will stand united in their efforts. Trump agreed, reaffirming that both nations must take strong measures to eliminate cross-border terrorism.

Tariff Issues: Trump did not hold back in discussing the impact of India’s high tariffs on US exports. He pointed out that India is one of the highest tariff-imposing nations globally and called it a “different way of doing business.” He also highlighted the difficulties US companies face due to trade barriers, with tariffs sometimes reaching as high as 70%. In response, Trump shared his new approach: “Whatever you charge, we charge,” indicating a more aggressive stance on trade negotiations.

These talks mark a significant step in enhancing the US-India relationship, especially in defense, energy, and trade, as both countries seek to address long-standing economic and security concerns.
