National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, 87, participated in a religious program at the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, on Thursday. During the event, Abdullah delighted devotees by singing the Hindi bhajan ‘Tune Mujhe Bulaya Sherawaliye’.

Seated inside the ashram, Abdullah was handed a microphone by another singer performing the bhajan. As the singer sang the line “Tune mujhe bulaya Sherawaliye”, Abdullah promptly completed it with “Main aaya, main aaya Sherawaliye”. The senior leader wore a traditional red scarf associated with Vaishno Devi pilgrims, adding to the devotional atmosphere.

Abdullah Supports Protests Against Katra Ropeway Project

At the same event, Abdullah voiced his support for Katra residents protesting against the proposed ropeway project. He criticized the shrine management for ignoring the concerns of the local population. “The shrine’s management should ensure that their actions do not harm or create difficulties for the residents of Katra,” he said, praising the locals for their resilience.

Abdullah condemned the ropeway project, alleging it was initiated without considering the city’s interests. “Those in power think they are untouchable, but they are mistaken. Real power lies with the people, not the government,” he remarked, taking a veiled dig at the Lieutenant Governor.

Highlighting the local community’s dependence on the pilgrimage for their livelihood, Abdullah said, “The people of these hills rely on Mata’s blessings. Yet, their needs are being ignored. Divine power will ultimately prevail, and those in power will have to reckon with it. Just look at what’s happening in California,” he added, referencing recent global events.

On Religious Teachings

Abdullah also emphasized the shared essence of all religions, lamenting that these teachings are often exploited by individuals with selfish motives. “Every religion promotes the same core values, but unfortunately, people with self-serving agendas distort these teachings,” he noted.

The event showcased Abdullah’s efforts to bridge cultural and religious divides while advocating for the rights and livelihoods of Katra’s residents.
