Toronto: After the surprise resignation of his deputy, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing growing pressure as more than a third of the ruling Liberal Party’s MPs call for a leadership change. Reports on Monday evening stated that Trudeau has yet to decide whether to remain in power or step down, with nearly 60 out of 153 Liberal MPs in the House of Commons seeking his resignation.

Trudeau’s position weakened after Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s shocking resignation. In a letter on social media, Freeland criticized Trudeau, saying they were at odds over Canada’s future path. She revealed that Trudeau had offered her another cabinet position, but she decided to resign, stating that costly political gimmicks were not the answer at such a critical moment.

Freeland’s resignation fueled calls for Trudeau’s exit, with several MPs expressing dissatisfaction during a caucus meeting. Quebec MP Anthony Housefather remarked that the Prime Minister’s Minister’s relevance in the age of social media had expired. Despite the pressure, Trudeau has not confirmed whether he will step down.

Trudeau appointed Dominic LeBlanc as the new finance minister and publicly appeared in Gatineau, Quebec, where he acknowledged the challenging day but gave no indication of his political future. He stated it was an honor to serve as Prime Minister but did not confirm if he would stay until the next election, scheduled for October 2025.

Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre called for an immediate election, citing the chaos within the government, while Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-François Blanchet declared that Trudeau’s government was over. Freeland’s resignation, which came ahead of the government’s economic statement revealing a record deficit, further deepened the crisis.

Trudeau is also facing challenges from the U.S. over illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Meanwhile, his party trailed the Conservatives by nearly 20 points in recent polls, signaling a potential electoral loss. Parliament is set to adjourn on Tuesday, with Trudeau attending the National Caucus holiday party, where he is expected to make remarks.
