Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday disclosed that he had a meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to request the expunging of derogatory comments made against him in Parliament. Speaking to the media, Rahul Gandhi said, “I met with the Speaker and told him that derogatory comments against me should be expunged. The Speaker assured me that he would look into it. Our primary aim is to ensure the House runs smoothly and that discussions take place. Regardless of what they say about me, we want a debate on December 13. They don’t want a discussion on Adani, but we will not back down. They will keep levelling allegations, but the House must function.”
This meeting came after BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra sparked controversy on December 5 by alleging links between Rahul Gandhi and Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros. During a speech in the House, Dubey remarked, “Congress ka haath, Soros ke saath. Congress has ties with OCCRP, which is funded by the US government and George Soros. Did Rahul Gandhi take money from Soros for the Bharat Jodo Yatra?”
The allegations led to chaos in Parliament, with Congress MPs protesting by storming the Well of the House. The session was adjourned as a result, and Congress MPs demanded answers regarding their notices for breaches of privilege against Dubey and Patra.
Outside Parliament, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra responded to BJP’s Patra calling Rahul Gandhi a ‘traitor.’ She stated, “Those who can call Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi traitors have no qualms about calling Rahul Gandhi one. There is nothing new in this. I am proud of my brother, and for him, nothing is more important than this country.”
