External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar remarked on Wednesday that the outcome of the US election is unlikely to change the country’s trend toward caution regarding foreign commitments. Speaking at an event in Canberra, Australia, where votes were counted in the US, he indicated that Donald Trump might express this viewpoint more clearly.
“Since the Obama administration, the US has become significantly more cautious about its global commitments,” Jaishankar noted, referencing the reluctance to deploy troops and the withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden.
During a panel discussion alongside the foreign ministers of Australia and New Zealand, Jaishankar highlighted that while Trump may articulate these issues more effectively, they reflect an ongoing trend in US foreign policy.
Currently, on a four-day official visit to Australia, Jaishankar’s comments come in the context of Trump preparing to take office once again.
“It is essential to view the US more broadly rather than strictly through the ideological lens of the current administration,” he added.
Jaishankar also suggested that the era of US dominance and generosity may be coming to an end. “If we analyze the situation realistically, we should prepare for a world where the level of dominance and generosity that the US exhibited in the past might not continue,” he stated.
Despite these concerns, Jaishankar affirmed that India’s bilateral relationship with the United States will grow stronger.
