If you’re preparing to observe this fast, here are some important tips to ensure a healthy and smooth experience.

Prefast Preparation: Meenu Balaji, chief nutritionist at Pragmatic Nutrition, recommends starting your day with mindful activities like de p breathing or meditation to mentally prepare for the fast. She advises planning your schedule in advance and avoiding strenuous activitie to conserve energy. Keep your routine light and simple.

Balaji suggests eating foods that provide lasting energy, such as complex carbs, protein, and healthy fats. For example, try five soaked almonds, two dates, a bowl of vegetable oats porridge, and a glass of low fat milk. Alternatively, chia seed pudding with Greek yogurt, fresh fruit slices, nuts, and dried fruits works well.

Deepalakshmi, a registered dietitian at The Cleft and Craniofacial Centre and Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, recommends opting for a balanced meal to ensure lasting energy. Whole grains like roti or chapati paired with protein rich foods like thick dal, paneer, or curd are ideal. Millets can also be included in the meal.

Staying hydrated before the fast is crucial. Consider drinking coconut water, buttermilk, or plain water to avoid dehydration throughout the day.

Post fast Tips: Once the fast is over, rehydrating is the first priority. Plain water, coconut water, or lemon water should be consumed, followed by a light, easy-to-digest meal. Balaji advises eating smaller portions with a balanced mix of whole grains, protein, and healthy fats to replenish nutrients. Deepalakshmi suggests options like lentil soup, khichdi, roti with curd or paneer, or dal paired with fruits like papaya and watermelon.

Foods to Avoid: After breaking your fast, it’s best to avoid sugary, salty, or spicy foods, as they can lead to digestive issues like acidity. Caffeinated beverages like tea or coffee should also be skipped since they can dehydrate the body. Opt for light snacks such as boiled corn, roasted makhana, or sprouts chaat. For dessert, small portions of low-fat kheer or date-and nut laddoos made with jaggery are healthier choices. Balaji also recommends replacing regular tea with chamomile tea for a calming effect.
