Sushmita Sen has always been candid. During a conversation with Rhea Chakraborty, the Aarya actor emphasized the importance of making eye contact, even for simple requests like asking for water. She believes that addressing someone without looking at them is a significant form of disrespect. “Even if they are behind you, you should try to make eye contact. Even if you don’t mean any disrespect, your behavior should reflect your intentions,” Sen explained.

Echoing Sen’s sentiments, Arouba Kabir, an emotional and mental health professional and founder of Enso Wellness, elaborated on why eye contact matters. Kabir stated, “Eye contact is more than just a polite gesture; it’s a way to communicate, build relationships, and boost confidence. Whether you’re talking, expressing gratitude, or asking for help, eye contact can make a significant difference.”

Kabir further explained that maintaining eye contact helps establish trust and connection. “It’s like giving a firm handshake with your eyes. It shows engagement and interest, helping to build trust and a genuine connection. Imagine expressing gratitude while staring at someone’s feet—it’s like saying, ‘Thanks, but I’m also contemplating the meaning of life down here,’” she added.

Eye contact also facilitates emotional understanding, as eyes are often called the windows to the soul. “Maintaining eye contact allows you to pick up on subtle emotional cues, making you adept at reading the room. Without it, you might miss important signals, like when someone’s expression says ‘I’m fine!’ but their eyes say ‘Save me!’” Kabir noted.

Moreover, eye contact enhances confidence and communication, showing that you believe in what you’re saying and are not afraid to be seen. “Eye contact is like giving someone a VIP pass to your attention. It tells the other person that they matter and that you’re fully present in the conversation. Respect should be given to everyone, regardless of their designation or social stature,” Kabir concluded.

In essence, eye contact is a crucial element in effective communication, helping to build trust, convey respect, and enhance emotional understanding.
