With growing dissent in the Haryana BJP over ticket allocations since the release of its first list of 67 candidates last Thursday, party insiders suggest that a review of some candidates might be on the table.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, sources indicate that the BJP is considering the possibility due to the significant discontent within the party in recent days. “Reviewing some candidates’ names isn’t unprecedented. It has happened before. Although nothing is definite at this moment, it remains a possibility,” a source revealed.
However, some party members argue that such a review might not be beneficial. “Replacing five to six candidates doesn’t guarantee success. It could placate some, but those originally selected may become disheartened, and others who sought changes might become even more dissatisfied. Revising the list after it’s been announced can also create its own issues and may not reflect well on the party,” explained a BJP leader from Haryana.
The discontent has been palpable since the first list was unveiled, leading to several leaders expressing their frustration. BJP state OBC morcha chief and former minister Karan Dev Kamboj, who was denied tickets for the Indri and Radaur seats, has openly criticized the decision. “I have not heard of any planned review for these seats,” Kamboj told The Indian Express.
Former Haryana minister Kavita Jain, denied the Sonipat ticket in favor of Nikhil Madan, has reportedly been distressed, adding to speculation that Sonipat might be reconsidered.
In Kalanaur, anger has erupted among party workers from the leather-working Dalit community, who are unhappy with the ticket being given to Renu Dabla from the SC Dhanuk community. A mahapanchayat of the leather-working caste has demanded a candidate from their community instead.
Haryana’s Minister of State for Social Justice, Bishamber Valmiki, has also voiced opposition after Kapoor Valmiki was chosen for the SC-reserved Bawani Khera seat, a position he had hoped to secure.
In Kalka, Shakti Rani Sharma, wife of former Congress leader Venod Sharma, was selected over former MLA Latika Sharma, sparking dissatisfaction among Latika’s supporters. Although Latika lost in 2019 after winning in 2014, some believe this seat might be reconsidered.
Tosham has seen Shashi Ranjan Parmar opt to run as an Independent after being denied a ticket, with the party’s candidate being Shruti Choudhry, daughter of former Congress member Kiran Choudhary.
In Hisar, Savitri Jindal, mother of BJP MP Naveen Jindal, has publicly expressed her displeasure over her son’s denial of a ticket. Kamal Gupta is the party’s candidate for this seat.
As of now, the BJP has remained largely silent on the widespread dissent among its leaders.
