Since his appointment as the BJP’s Rajasthan in-charge in July, Rajya Sabha MP Radha Mohan Das Agrawal has been causing ripples with his controversial statements. His inaugural address on August 20, during a state-level workshop for the party’s upcoming membership drive, has drawn significant backlash.
Agrawal’s comments have targeted prominent figures across the political spectrum. He criticized former Chief Ministers Ashok Gehlot and Vasundhara Raje, as well as current CM Bhajan Lal Sharma, Sachin Pilot, and Rajendra Rathore. His remarks have particularly aggravated Rajput groups, leading to protests and incidents like ink being hurled at him allegedly by Pilot’s supporters.
During his August 20 address, Agrawal publicly chastised BJP veteran Rajendra Rathore, whose departure from the meeting for prior commitments was used to question his commitment to the party. This sparked immediate backlash from Rathore’s supporters and Rajput organizations, who launched campaigns against Agrawal and demanded an apology.
Agrawal’s comments on Vasundhara Raje, who was absent from the event, also drew criticism. He mentioned that she appeared weak during a recent visit to Delhi, a remark that was deemed insensitive. However, he later praised Raje, attempting to mend relations.
In another contentious moment, Agrawal made a remark about CM Bhajan Lal Sharma, saying, “Don’t humiliate Bhajan Lal Sharma like Shurpanakha who had her nose cut off.” This comment, interpreted as a warning against potential failure in upcoming elections, was seen as problematic by some party members.
Agrawal’s remarks extended to Congress leaders as well, describing Sachin Pilot as a “spent force” and suggesting that only Gehlot’s “political last rites” were left. These comments led to further outrage, with Congress workers staging protests and vandalizing his vehicle.
Despite his tenure beginning with a series of gaffes, Agrawal, a seasoned politician with a background in RSS and a history of electoral success, remains a key figure for the BJP. His future actions and ability to address the growing discontent will be crucial for his role in Rajasthan.
