Two significant events last week—the performance of Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics and the political developments in Dhaka—highlighted a valuable lesson: Indian politicians could learn a lot from our sportspersons.

When wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced disqualification for being just 100 grams overweight, she expressed her despair on X, saying, “everything is shattered…Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024.” In response, Beijing Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra offered words of encouragement: “Some (victories) end up in a cabinet (cupboard) but the ones that matter find their way into the stories we tell our children. And every child in the country will know the champion you are.”

This exchange underscores a broader lesson for politicians. Just as athletes like Phogat and Bindra face immense pressure and setbacks but ultimately contribute to a larger narrative of perseverance and excellence, politicians too should focus on the impact of their actions on the nation’s future rather than short-term gains. The dedication, resilience, and ability to inspire that characterize our athletes can serve as a powerful example for politicians aiming to serve the country with integrity and long-term vision.
