Delhi Heatwave: The capital city experienced its warmest night in 12 years, with the minimum temperature reaching a scorching 35.2 degrees Celsius, significantly higher than the seasonal norm by eight degrees.
The last record for the warmest night was set in June 2012, when the minimum temperature was 34 degrees Celsius. Tuesday night was also unusually warm, with temperatures settling at 33.8 degrees Celsius.
Hospitals in Delhi-NCR are witnessing an influx of patients suffering from heatstroke and exhaustion. Doctors have advised the elderly and immuno-compromised individuals to avoid going outdoors. The Delhi government has reserved two hospital beds in each government-run hospital and five at LNJP Hospital specifically for heat stroke patients.
Relief is anticipated starting Wednesday, with a gradual decline in temperatures and light rainfall expected on June 20.
The persistent heatwave has also caused a spike in the city’s power demand. On Tuesday afternoon, Delhi’s power consumption soared to an all-time high of 8,647 MW. The previous peak was 8,302 MW on May 29 this year. Delhi’s peak power demand crossed the 8,000 MW mark for the first time on May 22, 2024.
