Disappointed Hasaranga Takes Full Responsibility for Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup Exit
Sri Lanka captain Wanindu Hasaranga has taken full responsibility for the team’s early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. After losing to Bangladesh and South Africa, Sri Lanka was knocked out in the group stages, managing to win only one of their four matches.
Speaking at the post-match press conference after their final game against the Netherlands on June 17, Hasaranga reflected on the team’s disappointing performance. He noted the challenges posed by constant travel and varying conditions, but ultimately took responsibility for the team’s failures.
“Unfortunately, our first match in New York was not successful, and then we went to Dallas and couldn’t adjust to the pitch there either. As a team and as captain, I take full responsibility,” Hasaranga stated.

Despite the setbacks, Hasaranga refused to blame the pitches in the USA and West Indies for their poor performance. He emphasized that the team needed to elevate their standards and adapt better to the conditions.
“Blaming the pitches and making excuses when we lose is not acceptable. All teams play on the same pitches, and as professional cricketers, we need to adjust. We represent our country in these tournaments, and we should have improved our cricket instead of blaming external factors. We failed to adapt as well as other teams, and that’s the main mistake,” Hasaranga added.
