A tragic incident unfolded in Carteret, New Jersey, where a 19-year-old Indian-origin man, Gaurav Gill, opened fire on two Indian women outside a residential building. Jasvir Kaur, 29, was killed, while Gagandeep Kaur, 20, is in critical condition. Gill, who is from Kent, Washington, has been arrested and faces multiple charges.
The shooting occurred on Wednesday morning, and the police apprehended Gill within hours. According to CBS News, the incident took place outside Jasvir Kaur’s home, where she was hosting her cousin, Gagandeep Kaur. Jasvir succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, and Gagandeep is currently receiving treatment at University Hospital in Newark.
Gill and Gagandeep were acquainted, having attended an IELTS coaching center in Nakodar, Punjab, together. Jasvir, originally from Gorsian near Nurmahal in Punjab, worked at an Amazon facility in Carteret. Her husband, a truck driver, was out of town at the time of the incident, according to News12 New Jersey.
Jasvir’s father, Kewal Singh, described his daughter as supportive and shared that she had moved to the US about five years ago. Gagandeep, who had recently come to the US on a study visa, had confided in Jasvir about her academic struggles. Kewal recounted that on the morning of the incident, Gagandeep had an argument with Gill outside the house and called Jasvir for help. When Jasvir intervened, Gill allegedly fired seven shots at her face, resulting in her death.
Gagandeep’s parents are small farmers, and her father also drives a school bus to make ends meet. Gagandeep and Gill had arrived in the US around the same time. Gagandeep’s mother, Surjit Kaur, mentioned that they were not familiar with Gaurav and were unaware of any disputes he might have had with their daughter.
Gill’s family is also affected by the incident. His father, Charan, resides in Muscat, and his mother was hospitalized after hearing the news, as reported by TOI.
Gaurav Gill faces several charges, including first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, fourth-degree possession of a high-capacity magazine, and first-degree attempted murder. He appeared before Judge Gary Price in Middlesex County Court for a brief hearing. Authorities have not yet provided a motive for the shooting or clarified the connection between Gill and the victims. Gill is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday for a detention hearing.
