Armed Chain Snatchers Open Fire at Delhi Traffic Police, Caught After Chase and Scuffle
New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday, two Delhi Traffic Police officers under the Shahdara Circle apprehended two armed chain snatchers despite being fired upon during the arrest.
According to Delhi Police, the incident took place in Dilshad Garden when two men, identified as Imran (26) and Warees (35), snatched three gold chains from a local resident, Praveen Soni, near Chetak Complex. The duo attempted to escape on a motorcycle toward Chintamani Red Light.
A vigilant bystander, Shiva Thakur, who witnessed the robbery, pursued the suspects and alerted traffic personnel stationed at Chintamani Chowk. Responding swiftly, Sub-Inspector Sanjeev and Constable Rahul Nain flagged down the motorcycle. When the suspects tried to flee, Constable Nain struck the bike with his leg, causing them to fall.
During the ensuing scuffle, Imran opened fire at SI Sanjeev but was overpowered and disarmed. Warees too attempted to fire but was swiftly subdued by Constable Nain. SI Sanjeev sustained minor injuries during the confrontation.
The incident drew a crowd, and videos circulating on social media show passersby assaulting the two accused before police intervened to restore order.
Police recovered two firearms — a pistol with six live cartridges from Imran and another with four cartridges from Warees — along with the stolen gold chains and the motorcycle used in the crime.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Warees has a criminal history involving 36 previous cases, while Imran’s background is being verified.
A senior police official commended the alertness and bravery of the traffic personnel in tackling armed criminals in a busy public area.
