‘Assault on Kashmiriyat’: What the J&K Assembly Resolution on the Pahalgam Attack Stated
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly convened a special session on Monday to address the terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. In a unanimous resolution moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, the House condemned the attack, describing it as a direct assault on the values of Kashmiriyat and endorsed the Central Government’s diplomatic actions against Pakistan.
What Did the Resolution Say?
The resolution termed the attack barbaric, inhumane, and cowardly, expressing deep shock and anguish over the loss of innocent lives. It paid tribute to Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a local pony wallah who sacrificed his life trying to protect tourists from the assailants.
“This House expresses its profound shock and anguish at the barbaric and inhumane attack perpetrated on innocent civilians at Pahalgam. This House unequivocally condemns the heinous, cowardly act that resulted in the loss of innocent lives,” the resolution stated.
It further emphasised that such acts of terror are a direct assault on the ethos of Kashmiriyat, the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution, and the long-standing spirit of unity, peace, and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir and the nation.
The Assembly expressed full solidarity with the victims and their families, extending condolences and reaffirming its resolve to support them in their time of grief.
Tribute to Shaheed Syed Adil Hussain Shah
The House honoured Shaheed Syed Adil Hussain Shah, acknowledging his bravery and selflessness. The resolution hailed his actions as an enduring symbol of courage and the true spirit of Kashmir.
“This House salutes the supreme sacrifice of Shaheed Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who, while bravely attempting to save tourists, laid down his life. His courage and selflessness embody the true spirit of Kashmir and shall serve as an enduring inspiration for future generations,” it read.
Backing Centre’s Diplomatic Measures
The Assembly also endorsed the diplomatic steps taken by the Union Government on April 23, 2025, which include suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, revoking visas for Pakistani nationals, and reducing the diplomatic staff at the Pakistan High Commission.
“This House endorses the diplomatic measures announced by the Union Government after the Cabinet Committee on Security meeting,” the document stated, as reported by ANI.
About the Pahalgam Attack
On April 22, terrorists opened fire at civilians gathered in a meadow near Pahalgam, one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most popular tourist spots, marking one of the region’s deadliest attacks since the 2019 Pulwama incident. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed that India would relentlessly pursue those responsible for the civilian massacre.
