Reconstructed Sangkalang Bridge Reopens, Restoring Vital Connectivity in North Sikkim

A newly reconstructed bailey bridge over the Teesta river at Sangkalang in North Sikkim was officially opened for traffic on Thursday, restoring a crucial link between Mangan and the Dzongu region, officials confirmed.

The 180-foot-long bailey bridge, with a 24-tonne load capacity, replaces the previous structure that collapsed on February 11, disrupting essential connectivity between Mangan, Dzongu, and Chungthang. The vital bridge was swiftly rebuilt by the Indian Army’s 72 Engineer Regiment of the Trishakti Corps, overcoming challenging terrain and adverse weather to complete the project in record time.

The collapse of the old bridge had severely restricted local movement and halted the supply of essential goods and services to the region. Its reopening, after more than two months, is expected to significantly improve the daily lives of residents and revive economic and tourism activity in North Sikkim — particularly in popular destinations like Chungthang, Lachung, and Lachen.

Local leaders and residents expressed gratitude to the Indian Army for their prompt action and commitment. Zilla Upadhakshya Sonam Kipa Bhutia praised the army’s efforts, saying, “The army has done a commendable job. Their response showcases the synergy between civil authorities and the armed forces.”

With the bridge now operational, tourism to the culturally vibrant Dzongu region and other scenic parts of North Sikkim is set to pick up, bringing much-needed economic and social relief to the area.
