Pahalgam Terror Attack: Tragedy Strikes Tourists in Kashmir, 26 Killed in One of Region’s Deadliest Civilian Assaults
What began as a serene getaway to the breathtaking meadows of Pahalgam in Kashmir turned into a horrifying tragedy on Tuesday. Armed terrorists opened fire on a group of people—mostly tourists—killing 26 men and injuring several others. It marks one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in Kashmir in recent years.
The attack occurred in the picturesque valley of Pahalgam, where vacationers from across India had gathered to enjoy the scenic beauty. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that five of the victims were from his state.
Among those killed was a 26-year-old lieutenant in the Indian Navy from Haryana, who had been recently married—just a week before the incident. Victims also included two individuals from Karnataka, two from Kolkata, and a local resident of Pahalgam.
In the aftermath of the massacre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his official visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to India early Wednesday. Home Minister Amit Shah has also flown to Jammu and Kashmir to personally oversee the situation on the ground.
As the nation mourns, the bodies of the victims were transported to Srinagar airport, where officials from various state governments have arrived to assist with repatriation efforts, according to news agency ANI.
