Indian Student Killed by Stray Bullet in Canada During Gang-Related Shooting

In a heartbreaking incident, a young international student from India lost her life in the Ontario town of Hamilton after being struck by a stray bullet during a gang-related shooting nearby.

The victim, identified by Hamilton Police as 21-year-old Harsimrat, was a student at Mohawk College. She was reportedly waiting at a bus stop on her way to work when the tragic incident occurred.

“Investigators believe the female was an innocent bystander struck by a stray bullet during a shooting in the area,” police said in a statement released on Friday.

The shooting took place around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. Harsimrat sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to hospital, but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators revealed that the passenger of a black Mercedes SUV opened fire on the occupants of a white sedan. The white vehicle fled the scene shortly after the shooting.

In a chilling detail, police noted that some of the gunfire also entered a nearby residence, shattering the rear window while people inside were watching television. “Fortunately, no one in the home was injured,” the police statement added.

India’s Consulate in Toronto expressed sorrow over the incident, stating they were “deeply saddened by the tragic death” and were offering all necessary assistance to the student’s family. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time,” the Consulate posted on X (formerly Twitter).

At a press conference, Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen extended condolences to Harsimrat’s family. “This is a young girl who had her whole life ahead of her and tragically lost her life because some thugs picked up a gun,” he said.

“Remember, Harsimrat’s family sent her to Hamilton to prepare her for her future, and there is now an empty seat at their dinner table—at her aunt’s house, and in her friends’ homes,” he added.

Mohawk College also released a statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “As a member of the Mohawk College community, we know this loss is being felt by many and we will do everything we can to support Harsimrat’s friends, family, and the broader college community,” a spokesperson said.

A homicide investigation is currently underway as police continue to gather evidence and identify those responsible.
