Air Hostess Alleges Sexual Assault While on Ventilator at Medanta Hospital, Gurugram; Claims Nurses Were Present But Did Not Act

Gurugram, Haryana — A 46-year-old air hostess from West Bengal has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a hospital staff member while she was unconscious and on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The incident allegedly took place on April 6, a day after she was admitted to the hospital due to a medical emergency.

According to a report by The Times of India, the woman stated in her police complaint that at the time of the assault, she was in a severely weakened state and unable to speak or resist. She further claimed that two nurses were present in the ICU during the incident but did nothing to stop the accused.

Background of the Incident

The complainant arrived in Gurugram on March 31 to participate in a training programme organized by an airline company in the Darbaripur area of Sector 75. During her stay, she reportedly fell ill after swimming in the hotel pool. Her condition worsened, and on April 5, she was admitted to Medanta Hospital.

In her statement, she mentioned that she was placed on a ventilator in the ICU due to respiratory complications. It was during this critical period on April 6, while still unconscious, that the alleged assault occurred.

She was discharged from the hospital on April 13. After regaining strength and recounting the incident, she informed her husband, who then helped her file a formal complaint with the Sadar police station. The FIR was registered the next day under charges of molestation and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Hospital Responds

Medanta Hospital has issued an official statement acknowledging the complaint and affirming its full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.

“We have been made aware of a complaint from a patient and have been fully cooperating with the investigations conducted by the relevant authorities. At this stage, no allegations have been substantiated. All relevant documents, including CCTV footage from the hospital covering the period in question, have been handed over to the police,” the hospital’s statement read.

Police Action and Investigation

Gurugram’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Gaurav, stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to handle the case, considering the gravity of the allegations. The SIT is headed by Sadar ACP Yashwant and is tasked with reviewing the CCTV footage and questioning hospital staff who may have had contact with the patient.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation from all possible angles. Given the sensitivity of the case, further details cannot be shared at this stage,” DCP Gaurav said.

Police officials also confirmed that they are verifying the woman’s medical condition at the time of the incident, reviewing ICU protocols, and examining whether negligence by hospital staff may have contributed to the situation.
