Yogi Adityanath Slams Mamata Banerjee Over Murshidabad Violence, Questions Her ‘Silence’ on Waqf Act Unrest

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday launched a sharp critique of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the ongoing violence in the state’s Murshidabad district, accusing her of remaining silent while large-scale unrest unfolded over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

“Bengal is burning. The chief minister is silent. She calls rioters ‘messengers of peace’. But those who understand only force won’t listen to words,” Adityanath said, as quoted by ANI. He further alleged that under the guise of secularism, rioters were being given a free hand to incite chaos and destabilize the region. “Murshidabad has been on fire for the past week, yet the state government continues to remain silent. Such anarchy must be curbed,” he added.

The Uttar Pradesh CM also targeted opposition parties, including the Congress and Samajwadi Party, over their silence on the matter. “I thank the judiciary for ordering the deployment of central forces to ensure the safety of the minority Hindu community. But why are the Congress and SP silent on the violence in Murshidabad?” he questioned.

Murshidabad Unrest

The violence in Murshidabad erupted last week amid intensifying protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. At least three people have been reported dead, and several others have been injured. The unrest forced many residents to flee, with reports of people crossing into neighbouring Malda district in search of safety.

Grim visuals from Murshidabad showed widespread arson, with shops, homes, and other properties set ablaze by mobs. Tensions also spilled over into South 24 Parganas’ Bhangar, where clashes broke out following a protest rally against the Waqf law.

In response to the deteriorating situation, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central paramilitary forces. The West Bengal police, meanwhile, have arrested over 150 people in connection with the violence and assured that the situation is under control. Authorities have urged the public not to fall for misinformation that could worsen tensions.

Mamata Banerjee Appeals for Calm

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a post on social media platform X, appealed to the people to maintain peace and avoid violence. She clarified that the Waqf law in question was enacted by the central government, not the state.

Despite her appeal, the BJP has intensified its criticism of the Trinamool Congress-led government, accusing it of appeasement politics and alleging that Hindu residents are being forced to flee due to targeted attacks.

The situation remains tense in parts of Murshidabad and surrounding districts, with security forces on high alert to prevent further flare-ups.
