Waqf Land Misused for Personal Gains, Not Public Welfare: PM Modi Targets Congress at Hisar Rally
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Hisar, Haryana on Monday, launched a sharp attack on the misuse of Waqf properties, stating that the land meant for the welfare of the poor had been exploited for personal gain by a select few.
“Across the country, there are lakhs of hectares of land registered under Waqf. These properties should have been used to support the poor, vulnerable women, and children. Had they been used with integrity, my young Muslim brothers wouldn’t be spending their lives fixing cycle punctures,” PM Modi said.
He accused land mafias of benefiting from Waqf land while marginalized Muslim communities remained excluded. “This arrangement served only a handful of land mafias. The backward Muslim community gained nothing. And whose land were these mafias grabbing? They were encroaching on the land of Dalits, Adivasis, backward classes, and widows,” he said.
Modi added that the government began re-examining the Waqf law after receiving letters from Muslim widows highlighting instances of exploitation. He claimed that recent amendments to the law aim to curb such misuse and protect vulnerable communities.
“After Muslim widows brought their concerns to us, discussions on reforming the Waqf law began. We have now taken decisive action. A new provision ensures that the Waqf Board cannot claim tribal lands or homes anywhere in the country,” he said, calling it a “responsible and necessary step” to end long-standing injustices.
