Sehwag’s Brutal Take on Dhoni’s Cameo as CSK Hit New Low Against KKR
Virender Sehwag didn’t mince words as he assessed MS Dhoni’s brief appearance at the crease during Chennai Super Kings’ crushing defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday night. On the post-match show, after KKR’s emphatic win, anchor Jatin Sapru floated the idea that Dhoni might have salvaged CSK’s innings had he stayed longer. But Sehwag, known for his straight shooting, dismissed the notion in trademark fashion.
“I don’t think so. Even if he hadn’t gotten out, they’d have scored maybe 130 at best. KKR chased 104 in 10.1 overs. The only difference would’ve been us going live at 11:30 PM instead,” Sehwag said, clearly unimpressed by CSK’s dismal performance at their home ground.
The loss marked a historic low for the five-time champions — their first time losing three consecutive matches at Chepauk in IPL history. CSK managed just 103/9, their lowest-ever total at the venue and third-lowest overall in the league’s history.
Despite Dhoni returning as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to injury, the Super Kings looked completely off rhythm. Coming in at No. 9, Dhoni scored just 1 run off 4 balls before falling LBW to Sunil Narine in the 16th over — a dismissal that left the Chepauk crowd in stunned silence and reignited debates over whether he should’ve batted higher up the order.
CSK’s innings never found momentum. They scraped together just 31 runs in the powerplay and kept losing wickets regularly. Only Shivam Dube (31*) and Vijay Shankar (29) offered brief resistance, as KKR’s spinners — led by Narine (3/13) and Varun Chakaravarthy (2/18) — completely dismantled the hosts.
KKR made light work of the chase. Sunil Narine smashed a fiery 44 off 18 balls, clearing the ropes five times, while Rinku Singh finished things off with a towering six off Ravindra Jadeja in just the 11th over.
The defeat marked CSK’s fifth straight loss in IPL 2025, leaving them at ninth in the points table with only a single win. KKR, on the other hand, climbed to third with a balanced 3-3 record in six matches.
