Bumrah’s Return Sets the Stage for a Kohli-Banter Classic at Wankhede
Jasprit Bumrah marked his comeback on Monday as Mumbai Indians locked horns with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in an electrifying IPL 2025 fixture at the Wankhede Stadium. But amidst the sixes, boundaries, and high-octane drama, a quirky moment between Bumrah and Virat Kohli stole the limelight.
It happened in the 11th over of RCB’s innings. After Rajat Patidar hesitated over a quick single, Bumrah swooped in, picked up the ball, and humorously feigned a run-out attempt at Kohli’s end. Not one to let such antics slide, Kohli turned the moment into theatre — casually bumping into Bumrah with a playful shoulder nudge. The crowd instantly roared to life, relishing the light-hearted exchange that echoed Kohli’s infamous shoulder bump with Sam Konstas during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While that moment stirred controversy, this one brought laughter — a spirited twist that showcased the camaraderie and fire both players bring to the field.
Kohli didn’t just entertain with his antics — his bat did the talking too. The RCB star smashed 67 off 42 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes at a sizzling strike rate of 159.52. His knock laid the foundation for a commanding total, as RCB racked up 221/5 in their 20 overs. Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma added fuel to the fire, finishing with a flurry that put the pressure squarely on Mumbai.
Speaking after the innings, Kohli was upbeat. “That was a solid recovery after an early wicket. Dev gave us a real boost with a powerful impact knock. Once I got into rhythm, I was able to execute my shots and explore the field. It’s important to adapt in T20s — you can’t stay stagnant. I tried a few new things out there.”
He also reserved special praise for Patidar and Jitesh: “Rajat did what he always does — deliver when it matters. And Jitesh was outstanding at the death. That extra 20–25 runs they got us could be crucial. One of their spinners was taken out of the game, which opened up scoring options. Overall, it was a well-executed innings.”
