Eknath Shinde Breaks Silence on Kunal Kamra Controversy: ‘Satire Has Limits’
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has spoken out on the controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra’s alleged joke about him, stating, “We understand satire, but there should be a limit.”
Kamra sparked a significant backlash on Sunday after allegedly mocking Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde by modifying a song from the Bollywood film Dil Toh Pagal Hai. Without directly naming Shinde, Kamra’s remark was perceived as a ‘gaddar’ (traitor) jibe.
Shiv Sena leaders strongly condemned Kamra’s comments, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urging him to apologize for what he called “low-level comedy.”
Shinde’s Response: ‘This Is Not Freedom of Speech’
Addressing the controversy, Shinde remarked, “Freedom of speech exists, and we understand satire, but there must be boundaries.”
In what appeared to be a swipe at the opposition, Shinde suggested that Kamra’s remarks were akin to “taking a supari (contract) to speak against someone.” He further accused Kamra of repeatedly targeting figures such as the Prime Minister, the Supreme Court, journalist Arnab Goswami, and certain industrialists.
“This is not freedom of speech; this is working for someone,” Shinde asserted.
Shiv Sena Workers Storm Comedy Venue
Following the controversy, Shiv Sena workers vandalized the Habitat comedy club, where Kamra’s show was hosted. Several party members were detained and arrested by Mumbai police for the damage caused.
Reacting to the vandalism, Shinde stated, “The other person should also maintain a certain level; otherwise, action causes a reaction.”
An FIR was registered at Khar police station against 19 Shiv Sena leaders and workers under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Maharashtra Police Act.
Karma’s Response: ‘I Will Not Apologize’
Kamra defended himself, emphasizing that freedom of expression should not be limited to praising those in power. He asserted that his right to make jokes about public figures remains unchanged and made it clear that he would not apologize.
The comedian also condemned the attack on the comedy club, stating, “The Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it control what I say. Neither does any political party.”
Drawing an analogy, Kamra remarked, “Attacking a venue for a comedian’s words is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes because you didn’t like the butter chicken you were served.”
He added that he was willing to cooperate with legal authorities for any lawful action.
