Delhi to Launch Water Tourism: Yamuna Boat Rides Set to Begin

Delhi residents will soon experience boat rides on the Yamuna, as the Delhi government and the Centre signed an MoU on Tuesday to develop water tourism along the 4-kilometer Sonia Vihar-Jagatpur stretch.

Speaking at the signing event in Asita Park, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena announced plans to expand the service, easing traffic congestion and offering alternative transport options for commuters. He emphasized the significance of integrating river, road, and metro transport, adding that a public-private partnership (PPP) model would be explored for further development.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta hailed the initiative as a step toward giving Delhi a modern identity, with a focus on cleanliness, beautification, and urban development. She noted that eco-friendly electric-solar hybrid boats would be introduced to promote sustainable travel.

Gupta envisions Yamuna ghats transforming into cultural and artistic hubs, similar to Varanasi while reaffirming the government’s commitment to cleaning the Yamuna and ongoing developmental efforts.

Expressing gratitude to all departments involved, she remarked, “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, we are making the impossible possible.”

Infrastructure & Future Plans

Saxena announced that charging stations and other facilities will be developed to enhance the experience for commuters. Calling it a “historic day” for Delhi, he stressed the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and the development of waterways.

PM Modi’s vision focuses on strengthening India’s water transport network, and we are taking concrete steps to restore Delhi’s ecological balance,” Saxena said.

Acknowledging past delays in Yamuna cleaning, he noted that earlier, the river was treated like a drain, but under the new administration, progress has accelerated.

The government also announced plans to improve public transport, ease traffic congestion, and boost local businesses.

“This is just the beginning. More developments are on the way, and we will collaborate with private players to expand and enhance the system,” the LG added.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, PWD Minister Pravesh Verma, and Delhi Capital Minister were also present at the event.
