Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Friday, underscored that the Delhi Police’s foremost priority must be the eradication of interstate criminal gangs operating within the national capital. He urged security officials to take a “ruthless approach” to accomplish this task. The directive was issued during a high-level security review meeting held in Delhi, which was attended by newly-elected Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Commissioner of Police Ashish Sood, and senior law and order officials.

During the review, Shah pressed Delhi Police to take an uncompromising stance against organized criminal networks. He called for a comprehensive “top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top” approach to tackle narcotics crimes, stressing the importance of dismantling drug networks. “Action must be swift and decisive to break these operations,” he stated.

In addition, Amit Shah instructed Delhi Police to take stringent action against the networks facilitating the illegal entry of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas into India. He described the issue as a critical national security concern. “The entire network that helps illegal intruders from Bangladesh and Rohingya communities enter India, forge documents, and facilitate their stay must be dismantled. This is a matter of national security, and it demands strict action. They must be identified and deported without delay,” he emphasized.

Further, the Home Minister addressed issues related to traffic congestion, advising DCP-level officers to visit police stations and hold public hearings to resolve citizen grievances. “Delhi Police should identify locations with frequent traffic jams, and the Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary must collaborate to quickly resolve these problems and bring relief to the public,” Shah instructed.

Shah also directed the Delhi government to prepare a comprehensive ‘Monsoon Action Plan’ to address recurring waterlogging issues by pinpointing and tackling the areas most affected during the monsoon season.

In addition, the Union Home Minister made it clear that the Delhi Police’s approval would no longer be required for construction-related matters within the city, aiming to streamline administrative processes. Lastly, Shah called for the immediate appointment of special prosecutors by the Delhi government to expedite the legal proceedings related to the 2020 Delhi riots cases, ensuring their swift and efficient disposal.
