Mayawati’s Leadership Overhaul Sparks Uncertainty Over Akash Anand’s Future in BSP
In the wake of the Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) disappointing performance in the Delhi Assembly elections, party chief Mayawati has implemented key leadership changes, raising fresh questions about the status of her heir apparent, Akash Anand.
As part of the restructuring, Mayawati replaced Delhi BSP president Laxman Singh with Rajesh Tanwar, the former vice president of the unit. Laxman Singh has now been reassigned as general secretary, while Sujeet Smrat has been elevated to vice president. Additionally, Rajya Sabha MP and BSP’s central coordinator, Ramji Gautam, has taken over as the new party in charge of Delhi.
However, the biggest point of speculation remains Akash Anand’s position in the party. Sources familiar with the developments claim that during a meeting on February 17, Mayawati informed party office-bearers that Akash had been “relieved of his responsibilities.” Yet, there has been no formal announcement clarifying whether he still holds the title of national coordinator or remains in line as her political successor, leaving party members uncertain about his role.
A leader close to Akash dismissed the speculation, asserting, “This appears to be a rumor. There has been no official communication, and Akash-ji’s social media accounts still list him as the BSP national coordinator. When Behanji removed him from his posts in 2024, she made a formal announcement. This time, no such statement has been made.”
The speculation gained momentum following Mayawati’s cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) on February 16, in which she emphasized that “personal relationships” hold no priority in the party’s decision-making. She reiterated that her successor must be someone who, like her under Kanshi Ram’s mentorship, is dedicated to strengthening the party and committed to its mission, regardless of personal ties.
With no clear directive on Akash Anand’s role, the confusion within the BSP continues, raising questions about the party’s future leadership.
