Delhi Court Grants AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan Protection from Arrest in Police Team Assault Case

A Delhi court on Thursday granted AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan protection from arrest in a case related to an alleged attack on a police team in Jamia Nagar on February 10.

The Delhi Police had filed a case against Khan, alleging that he led a mob in attacking a Crime Branch team attempting to arrest Shabaz Khan, an accused in an attempt-to-murder case. The AAP leader was also accused of aiding the escape of the proclaimed offender.

Court’s Decision & Investigation Directives

Special Judge Jitendra Singh granted interim relief to the Okhla MLA, directing him to cooperate with the investigation. The court also instructed the Delhi Police to submit all documents related to the case—excluding CCTV footage—by February 24.

Khan’s lawyer, Rajat Bharadwaj, stated, “The court has granted interim protection until February 24. We have received a notice to join the investigation, and we are complying today. The prosecution has been asked to file a proper reply.”

Addressing the media, Khan said, “Everything is before the court. I will present my case there. I will join the investigation at 5 PM today.”

Khan Alleges Police Conspiracy

Khan has accused the Delhi Police of falsely implicating him to cover up their mistakes. He claimed that the man pursued by the police was already out on anticipatory bail, granted by a Saket court in 2018.

The AAP leader explained that he had gone to the area to inspect non-functioning water pumps when locals informed him about plainclothes officers harassing a resident.

“I was asked to intervene, but I had no personal connection to the individual. When I enquired, I was told that some unidentified men were threatening him. They refused to disclose their identities and left only when he showed them a court order,” Khan wrote in a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora.

He further alleged that he had planned to file a complaint against the officers in plainclothes for illegal behavior, but to protect themselves, the police twisted the facts and made baseless allegations against him.

Khan’s Political Standing

Amanatullah Khan retained his Okhla seat in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, defeating BJP’s Manish Choudhary by 23,639 votes. The AIMIM candidate Shafia ur-Rehman Khan secured third place with 39,558 votes, while Congress candidate Ariba Khan trailed behind.
