The Z-Morh Tunnel has significantly impacted the tourism industry and local economy in Sonamarg, Ganderbal, by ensuring continuous access throughout the year. The ₹2,717 crore project, spanning 11.98 km, has not only improved connectivity but also stimulated economic activity in the region, making Sonamarg a viable destination for both tourists and businesses year-round.
Local vendors have experienced a transformation in their livelihoods due to the tunnel. Previously, they faced extended off-seasons during the winter months, but now they can earn throughout the year. A vendor explained, “Before the tunnel, we would sit idle for six months, but now there’s work year-round, and more people are coming from Srinagar and Ganderbal.”
This boost in tourism is reflected in the increased footfall from surrounding areas. Sonamarg, once a seasonal destination, is now welcoming visitors all year. “Earlier, the tourism department would remove the Sonamarg sign in November, signaling the end of the tourist season. Now, we can welcome tourists throughout the winter,” shared another local vendor.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in January 2025, marking a significant step toward improving regional infrastructure. Alongside Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, J&K LG Manoj Sinha, and former CM Omar Abdullah, the inauguration highlighted the tunnel’s crucial role in strengthening connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. Gadkari praised the project, calling it a “marvel of engineering” that ensures uninterrupted access to both regions year-round.
The tunnel’s design includes critical safety features such as a parallel escape tunnel, a 3.7 km creeper lane for heavy vehicles, and numerous approach roads and bridges. These upgrades are part of Prime Minister Modi’s broader vision to modernize the region’s mobility infrastructure.
Looking ahead, the Zojila Tunnel, expected to be completed by 2028, will further reduce travel times and enhance vehicle speeds, improving the overall route from Srinagar to Ladakh. This will not only make travel more efficient for civilians but will also bolster defense logistics, improving security and connectivity between Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Together, these infrastructure developments promise to elevate Sonamarg as a year-round tourist hub, while creating lasting benefits for local businesses and the broader regional economy. The enduring accessibility will also support sustainable growth in tourism, adventure sports, and trade, making the region a prime destination for both national and international visitors.
