Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended heartfelt condolences over the tragic mid-air collision near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., which has left 67 people feared dead.
In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his sorrow, stating: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the tragic collision in Washington, D.C. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. We stand in solidarity with the people of the United States.”
The disaster occurred on Wednesday night when an American Airlines plane and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter collided mid-air near Reagan National Airport, causing both aircraft to crash into the Potomac River. U.S. authorities have confirmed that all 67 people on board are feared dead.
According to CNN, the American Airlines plane’s flight data recorder, or black box, has been recovered from the river. So far, 40 bodies have been retrieved, while search and recovery operations continue.
U.S. President Donald Trump also expressed deep grief over the catastrophe, calling it a “devastating moment” in the nation’s history. He announced plans to meet with the victims’ families, stating: “I will be meeting with some people who were very badly hurt, along with their family members.”
Acknowledging the global impact of the tragedy, including Russian nationals among the victims, Trump assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the crash and to prevent similar disasters in the future.
In a press briefing, he added: “Sadly, there are no survivors. This was a dark and excruciating night for our nation—a tragedy of terrible proportions. We grieve for every precious soul lost so suddenly. This has shaken not only our country but people around the world.”
