The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday directed AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal to submit a more detailed response regarding his allegation that the Haryana government was “mixing poison” in the Yamuna, stating that his remarks appeared to incite disharmony.

The Commission has given Kejriwal until 11 a.m. on Friday, January 31, to provide a detailed reply, warning that failure to do so would result in an appropriate decision being taken without further notice.

“Upon reviewing your response, the Commission has found that your allegations regarding the poisoning of the Yamuna prima facie promote disharmony, enmity between different groups, and public unrest, even under the most neutral interpretation,” the ECI stated in its letter.

The poll panel further cautioned Kejriwal that such remarks could disrupt relations between the residents of Haryana and Delhi, potentially creating long-term divisions.

“As a well-known public figure and former chief minister, you must be aware of the serious consequences that such statements can have, possibly leaving lasting divisions among residents of Haryana and the NCT of Delhi,” the letter added.

The ECI has specifically asked Kejriwal to provide a factual and detailed response addressing key aspects of his claim, including:

  • The type of poison allegedly mixed in the Yamuna
  • Any evidence supporting this claim
  • The location where the contamination was detected
  • Details of Delhi Jal Board engineers involved in identifying and preventing its entry into Delhi’s water supply

The Commission has also emphasized that his response should strictly focus on these aspects and should not be linked to the ongoing issue of rising ammonia levels in the Yamuna.

On Wednesday, in his initial response to the Commission, Kejriwal maintained that the raw water received from Haryana in recent days had been “highly contaminated and extremely poisonous” for human health.
