Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, was found guilty by a Sealdah court on Saturday.

The verdict, delivered by Sessions Court Judge Anirban Das, came 162 days after a PGT intern was discovered brutally raped and murdered on the hospital premises on August 9. The sentencing will be announced on Monday.

Roy was charged under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (rape), Section 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state), and Section 103 (punishment for murder). He was apprehended by Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old doctor’s body was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital.

In open court, the judge stated, “You are accused of entering RG Kar on August 9, attacking the doctor, resulting in her death, and sexually assaulting her. The crime is proven, and you are found guilty. The quantum of punishment will be declared on Monday. My findings are based on evidence presented by the CBI. You are remanded to custody effective today.”

The 66-day in-camera trial relied heavily on biological evidence, including DNA samples, viscera, and toxicology reports, as well as a layered voice analysis (LVA) that established Roy’s guilt.

The CBI revealed that saliva swabs and DNA samples from the victim’s body matched Roy’s, indicating he was the perpetrator. The victim reportedly put up a struggle, with five blunt force injuries identified on Roy’s body.

Additionally, the CBI arrested Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abhijit Mandal and former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh for allegedly destroying evidence and attempting to cover up the case. However, in December 2024, both were granted bail by the Sealdah court due to the CBI’s failure to file a chargesheet within 90 days of their arrest. Ghosh remains in judicial custody for a separate case involving alleged financial irregularities at the medical college.
