As the Maha Kumbh Mela unfolds in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, authorities are bracing for an unprecedented influx of pilgrims. With an estimated 45 crore devotees expected to attend the world’s largest religious gathering, the security measures in place ensure a safe and organized event for all participants. The seven-ring security plan, which includes a wide range of technological innovations, is designed to prevent any untoward incidents while maintaining the sanctity of the occasion.

The first significant crowd is expected to arrive on Paush Purnima (January 13), with authorities anticipating around 1 crore devotees, followed by the grand gathering on Makar Sankranti (January 14), when nearly 3 crore pilgrims will take the holy dip. Given the scale of this event, the police have declared the entire Mela area a ‘no vehicle zone’ to minimize congestion and set up traffic diversions on all seven key routes leading to the Sangam (confluence).

The security apparatus includes 2,751 CCTV cameras, of which 328 are AI-enabled, placed at strategic points, such as Sangam and the tent city, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring. With advanced AI analytics systems, authorities can track crowd movements in real-time, enhancing both surveillance and crowd management efforts.

To bolster security further, approximately 40,000 police officers, alongside paramilitary forces and specialized teams from the Uttar Pradesh technical services, have been deployed. Special attention is given to high-traffic locations such as pandals, camps, the Sangam area, and Sanskriti Gram. All these locations are under tight police surveillance to maintain order during the event.

Enhanced Monitoring: Anti-Drone Technology and Drones
Recognizing the evolving nature of security concerns, the authorities have integrated an advanced anti-drone system. This system, which is monitored by skilled professionals, ensures that no unauthorized drones enter the area, providing a high level of safety. Additionally, 20 state-of-the-art drones have been deployed for continuous surveillance, capturing real-time updates and ensuring the entire area is monitored at all times. The drones offer detailed footage of the crowd, aiding in both crowd control and security management.

The event is also supported by the upgraded Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), which provides crucial data for efficient management of both crowd control and traffic regulation, ensuring smooth operations during the festival.

Logistics and Infrastructure for Millions
The scale of the event has led authorities to set up over 150,000 tents to accommodate the millions of pilgrims. The crowd expected at the Kumbh Mela is three times the size of Russia’s population, necessitating an immense amount of resources. To ensure all facilities are powered adequately, more than 450,000 new electricity connections are being provided, with over half already assigned to various locations across the mela grounds.

Global and Spiritual Appeal
Beyond the millions of Indian devotees, the Kumbh Mela also attracts notable international personalities. Among the global attendees are figures like actor Richard Gere, filmmaker David Lynch, and the Dalai Lama, who come to experience the spiritual aura and profound significance of the event. The Kumbh Mela is not only a religious gathering but also a cultural and spiritual phenomenon that draws people from all around the world.

In recognition of its cultural importance, the Kumbh Mela was included in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, a testament to its profound impact on global spirituality.

A Deep Spiritual Journey
Held every three years in different cities along India’s sacred rivers, the Kumbh Mela is a time for millions to seek spiritual renewal and purification. The Maha Kumbh, held once every 12 years, is particularly special, considered the most auspicious and seeing the largest crowds. Devotees believe that taking a dip in the holy waters during the mela absolves them of their sins and grants them liberation from the cycle of life and death, making it a deeply transformative and sacred experience.
