Kangana Ranaut has candidly discussed the controversies surrounding her directorial debut, Emergency, acknowledging several “wrong choices” she made throughout the process. In a recent interview, she revealed her regret over directing the film herself and choosing a theatrical release instead of opting for an OTT platform.

Kangana on the delay in Emergency‘s release
In her conversation with News18, Kangana admitted she was “scared” by the delays when the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) withheld certification for several months. “I felt that releasing it in theatres was a mistake. I thought an OTT release would have been a better deal, and I wouldn’t have had to face censorship. The film wouldn’t have been dissected as it has been, and I wouldn’t have had to worry about what the CBFC would allow or cut,” she explained.

The CBFC, which is responsible for certifying films for public release in India, operates under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.

Kangana on directing Emergency
Kangana also reflected on her decision to direct Emergency, acknowledging that it was a misstep in hindsight. “I made many wrong choices during the film’s production, starting with the decision to direct it. I took it for granted that, even without a Congress government, the political climate would allow it. I previously mentioned Kissa Kursi Ka, a film that no one has seen because all prints were destroyed back then. Also, no one had dared to make films about Mrs. Gandhi before. Watching Emergency, today’s generation would be surprised to learn how she came to power, especially since she was elected PM three times. I underestimated the situation and thought I could make a film about the Emergency and get away with it,” she shared.

About Emergency
Emergency features Kangana as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, focusing on the latter part of her tenure, the Emergency period, and Operation Bluestar. Alongside Kangana, the film stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and Satish Kaushik in key roles. After several delays, Emergency is scheduled for theatrical release on January 17.
