The Samajwadi Party (SP) is intensifying its efforts to connect with backward classes, Dalits, and minorities through its “PDA Charcha” campaign, launched as a strategic move for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The campaign places B.R. Ambedkar at the forefront, with party leaders emphasizing his contributions and accusing the BJP of disrespecting the architect of the Indian Constitution.
Launched on December 26, the campaign was temporarily halted due to harsh winter conditions and the peak Rabi harvest season. It is set to resume on January 27. The PDA framework, introduced by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, aims to broaden the party’s voter base from its traditional Muslim-Yadav coalition to include “Pichde” (OBCs), “Dalits,” and “Alpasankhyak” (minorities).
The strategy proved successful in the 2024 general elections, where the SP won 37 seats in Uttar Pradesh, outperforming the BJP in the state. Building on this momentum, the PDA Charcha campaign involves extensive grassroots engagement, with SP leaders addressing issues central to Ambedkar’s legacy and advocating for policies like caste-based census, enhanced reservations, and constitutional protections.
Meetings held in districts such as Hardoi, Agra, Kanpur, and Etawah have highlighted Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks about Ambedkar. SP leaders, including OBC cell president Rajpal Kashyap, have used these remarks to rally support, presenting Ambedkar as a symbol of justice for marginalized communities.
The SP is strategically avoiding direct attacks on the BSP, recognizing that a significant portion of Dalit voters, especially Jatavs, remains loyal to Mayawati’s party. This calculated neutrality aims to consolidate Dalit support without alienating potential allies within the Indian opposition bloc.
SP leaders and elected representatives from diverse backgrounds are actively participating in the campaign. Upper-caste leaders are also involved, fostering unity among all social groups. Events emphasize Ambedkar’s principles, the need for social justice, and the SP’s vision of a more inclusive Uttar Pradesh.
With the BJP losing ground among Dalit voters in recent elections, the SP views the PDA campaign as a critical tool to maintain and expand its electoral base. By spotlighting Ambedkar’s legacy and addressing contemporary issues like caste census and farmers’ rights, the party hopes to solidify its position as a champion of marginalized communities leading up to 2027.
