The trend towards exploring lesser-known and offbeat destinations continues to grow in 2024, as Indian travelers embrace new experiences, often in places that were previously under the radar. This shift in travel patterns has been driven by improved infrastructure, better visa policies, and increased accessibility, making it easier for people to explore both domestic and international destinations. Industry experts agree that these developments have not only enhanced the convenience of travel but have also added an element of excitement for adventurous travelers
According to a Cleartrip report, Southeast Asia remains a top choice for Indian travelers largely due to simplified visa procedures and increased connectivity, with destinations like Bali experiencing a 73% surge in bookings. Southeast Asian countries have long been favored by their cultural richness, scenic beauty, and affordability, and the 2024 trend reflects a continued preference for these spots.
One of the key drivers of growth in travel has been the rise in affordable travel options, with Gen Z and Senior Citizens leading the charge. Cleartrip’s findings highlight that both groups have shown a marked increase in their adoption of budget-friendly travel options, making travel more inclusive for people from diverse age groups. Additionally, flexible payment options for travel have become increasingly popular, with younger generations, especially Gen Z, showing a higher adoption rate for these services.
“Improved visa and travel policies, coupled with the rise of affordable travel options, have made Southeast Asia a key destination for Indian travelers is also a notable increase in the adoption of flexible payment methods and budget-conscious travel choices among Gen Z and Senior Citizens,” said Anuj Rathi, Chief Business and Growth Officer at Cleartrip.
Domestic destinations, particularly beaches and islands, are also seeing a boom in bookings. With new flight routes connecting major cities to remote islands, such as Agatti Island in Lakshadweep and Diu, travelers flocked to these destinations for a quieter, more peaceful escape. Bookings to Agatti Island surged by 94%, while Diu saw a 130% increase, largely driven by the introduction of new air connectivity.
On a global scale, the trend towards exploring both established and lesser-known destinations is visible. Popular international destinations like Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, London, and Bangkok remain highly sought after, with flight searches showing significant increases. However, there is also a marked interest in less mainstream international locations like Baku, Azerbaijan, and Stepantsminda, Georgia, which saw a rise in accommodation searches of 133% and 212%, respectively. This shift shows a growing appetite for cultural exploration and the desire to experience places off the beaten path.
In addition to international destinations, domestic travel has also been marked by the search for authentic and unique experiences. Amritsar, known for its cultural and spiritual significance, saw a 106% increase in search activity, highlighting the growing interest in India’s historical and religious sites. New domestic destinations like Perumbakkam and Pangala are also gaining traction, reflecting a desire for new and untapped places to explore within India.
Sustainability is another key factor driving travel in 2024. Eco-conscious travelers are increasingly seeking environmentally friendly experiences, such as e-biking tours on the island of Divar in Goa, which ranked among the most searched attractions of the year. Sustainable tourism continues to gain momentum, with Indian travelers showing a preference for experiences that minimize environmental impact while offering enriching cultural encounters.
“2024 has seen a continued rise in the popularity of offbeat destinations, thanks to better connectivity, relaxed visa policies, and a focus on sustainable travel. Destinations like Shahdag in Azerbaijan and Gudauri in Georgia are becoming key attractions for Indian traveler’s adventure and unique experiences. This shift towards exploring lesser-known locales is reshaping the way we view travel, and we expect this trend to grow even further,” said Santosh Kumar, Country Manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia at Booking.com.
The evolving travel landscape of 2024 is characterized by a mix of cultural exploration, adventure, and sustainability. As Indian travelers increasingly look for destinations that offer new experiences, the tourism industry is poised to continue adapting, providing travelers with the tools, options, and opportunities to explore the world in more diverse and meaningful ways.
