Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani, who has been receiving treatment at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi, has shown gradual improvement in his condition, according to a statement from the hospital on Tuesday.
Based on his progress, the 97-year-old former Deputy Prime Minister is expected to be moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the next 1-2 days. The statement from the hospital read, “Shri LK Advani Ji, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India, has been under the care of Dr. Vinit Suri in the ICU of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals since December 12. He has shown gradual improvement, and he is likely to be shifted out of the ICU within the next 1-2 days.”
Advani was admitted to the hospital on Saturday for medical management and investigations. The hospital had earlier stated that Advani was stable under the care of Dr. Vinit Suri.
Earlier this year, Advani was also admitted to the hospital for routine check-ups and briefly for observation on a few occasions. In March, he was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, by President Droupadi Murmu.
Advani, born in Karachi in 1927, has been an influential figure in Indian politics, serving as BJP president several times and Deputy Prime Minister and Union Home Minister in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
