Ahead of the Constitution debate in the Lok Sabha, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Centre of engaging in unconstitutional activities, misusing autonomous bodies, and failing to uphold proper governance in the country.
“We have insisted on a discussion on the Constitution because numerous unconstitutional actions are taking place, autonomous bodies are being misused, and the governance in the country is lacking. This debate is crucial to show how the governance is being carried out,” Kharge stated in an interview with ANI.
He also indicated that the Congress party would carefully review the contents of the ”One Nation, One Election” bill before issuing any formal response. The Union Cabinet approved the bill on Thursday, seeking to synchronise nationwide elections. The bill is expected to be introduced in Parliament shortly.
The Lok Sabha will today begin a special debate to mark 75 years since the adoption of the Constitution, with newly elected Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra likely to deliver her maiden speech. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will kick off the two-day debate at noon, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to give the concluding remarks on December 14.
Prominent BJP leaders, including HD Kumaraswamy, Srikant Shinde, Shambhavi Chaudhary, Jiten Ram Manjhi, and Anupriya Patel, are expected to participate in the discussion. The debate is anticipated to focus on issues such as the Emergency and challenge the Opposition’s perspectives, according to BJP sources.
Opposition leaders, including DMK’sDMK’s TR Balu, A Raja, and Trinamool Congress MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra, are also expected to contribute to the debate.
Both the BJP and Congress have issued a three-line whip to their members, urging their attendance due to the importance of the session.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi reaffirmed on Wednesday the Opposition’s commitment to a meaningful discussion on the Constitution’s legacy during the December 13-14 session.
The winter session of Parliament, which began on November 25, has seen repeated disruptions and will continue until December 20.
