In the aftermath of 34-year-old Atul Subhash’s suicide, allegedly triggered by harassment from his wife and in-laws, Bengaluru Police have now enlisted the help of their Uttar Pradesh counterparts in an effort to locate the accused.
Atul Subhash, a resident of Munnekollal, was discovered dead inside his apartment on Monday. His brother, Bikas Kumar, subsequently filed a complaint against Atul’s estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family—mother Nisha, brother Anurag, and uncle Sushil Singhania—accusing them of driving Atul to suicide. The Marathahalli police booked the family members under charges related to abetment of suicide. They are alleged to have demanded Rs 3 crore in exchange for withdrawing legal cases against Atul, as well as Rs 30 lakh for visitation rights to see their son.
Bengaluru police confirmed that a team from the Marathahalli police station was dispatched to Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday to aid in tracking down the suspects. “The investigating officer will determine whether to issue arrest notices or detain the accused,” a senior police officer said.
Reports also indicate that Nisha and Anurag fled their home in Jaunpur late on Wednesday. Videos circulating on social media appear to show them leaving their residence in the early hours of the morning. “We have not received any official communication from Bengaluru Police regarding the case,” said Jaunpur SP Ajaypal Sharma.
Vijay Mishra, the lawyer for Atul’s in-laws, expressed bewilderment over the events, particularly the suicide. He pointed out that Nikita had previously filed a maintenance case against Atul. “We are unable to understand why he took such an extreme step. A thorough and fair investigation is crucial to uncover the facts,” Mishra stated.
Speaking to the media, Nikita’s uncle, Sushil Singhania, who is also named in the case, denied all allegations. “I have no involvement in this matter. The divorce proceedings have been ongoing for three years. Our family is not guilty, and the accusations made by Subhash are completely false. Nikita will present her side in court,” he asserted.
Police sources revealed that at approximately 1 am on Thursday, Nisha Singhania and her son Piyush left their home in the Khowa Mandi area on a motorcycle and have not returned since. A routine police presence has been maintained in Khowa Mandi to manage law-and-order concerns.
Meanwhile, Inspector Mithilesh Mishra, in charge of Kotwali Police Station in Jaunpur, confirmed that no formal orders had been issued to arrest Nisha or the other accused. Nikita and Atul married in April 2019, and in 2022, Nikita had filed an FIR accusing Atul and his family of dowry harassment.
