**BRICS Summit 2024 Live Updates:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Russian President Putin, expressing India’s readiness to assist in achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
PM Modi arrived in Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday for the 16th BRICS Summit, hosted by Russia. The summit gathers leaders from BRICS member nations, and PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with various counterparts during the event.
According to Russian state media outlet TASS, the summit will kick off with an evening dinner attended by leaders including President Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and PM Modi, where they will discuss a wide range of global issues.
Before departing India, PM Modi shared on social media platform X, “Leaving for Kazan, Russia, to participate in the BRICS Summit. India values BRICS highly, and I look forward to extensive discussions on a variety of subjects and meeting with fellow leaders.”
In a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi emphasized BRICS’s importance, stating, “I am departing today on a two-day visit to Kazan at the invitation of H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, to attend the 16th BRICS Summit.” He reiterated India’s commitment to close cooperation within BRICS and the forum’s role in tackling critical global issues like climate change, economic collaboration, and building resilient supply chains.
The PMO also highlighted that the recent inclusion of new members has enhanced BRICS’s inclusivity and global agenda. The statement underscored the significance of PM Modi’s visit in strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Russia, building on the July 2024 summit in Moscow.
The 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, running from October 22-24, will focus on “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). It will also serve as a platform to assess BRICS initiatives and explore potential areas for future collaboration.
This visit marks PM Modi’s second trip to Russia this year, following the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit in July, where he met with President Putin and received Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.
BRICS, originally formed as Bric after a 2006 meeting of Russia, India, and China, expanded to include South Africa in 2010. In 2024, the group welcomed five new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
