On Saturday, the National Conference-Congress alliance in Jammu and Kashmir plans to request a meeting with the Raj Bhavan to stake its claim to form the government in the Union Territory.

Following the INDIA bloc’s victory in the J&K Assembly elections, the Farooq Abdullah-led National Conference (NC) secured 42 seats, with its allies Congress winning six and CPI(M) one. Together, the alliance has 49 MLAs, surpassing the 46-seat majority required in the 90-member Assembly. The Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), both part of the INDIA bloc at the national level, won three and one seats, respectively.

“The LG is arriving (in the Valley). We will seek time tomorrow to present the letter of support and request a date for the swearing-in ceremony of the new government,” Abdullah said on Friday.

Abdullah acknowledged concerns about the limited powers of a government in a union territory. He emphasized the need for cooperation with the Central government to address the region’s significant challenges, stating, “We want to live in prosperity. Statehood should be restored so that the government can function effectively. After all, this is the crown of India. If the crown does not shine, how will the country shine?”

Meanwhile, in poll-bound Maharashtra, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and the rival Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) are set to hold competing Dussehra rallies on Saturday in Mumbai, with both factions releasing teasers ahead of the events. The rallies are seen as a show of strength ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections, with both sides expected to rally their supporters.

Additionally, Baramulla MP and Awami Ittehad Party leader Engineer Rashid’s bail is set to expire on Saturday. Rashid, who has been in custody since 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged involvement in a 2017 terror funding case, had received interim bail to campaign during the J&K Assembly elections. His bail was extended until October 12, after which he is required to surrender on Sunday.
