Let’s be honest: while we all love air-dried hair, nothing beats the feeling of a fresh blowout. If you enjoy styling your hair but are unsure which product to choose, you’re not alone. A trip to the salon can sometimes lead to more confusion than clarity, but don’t worry; we’re here to help.
Indianexpress.com spoke with haircare experts to highlight the key differences between various styling products and how they can affect the health of your beautiful locks.
What are the key differences between hair gel, wax, and mousse?
Dr. Kalyani Deshmukh, Consultant Dermatologist at Traya, explained the essentials of each product:
- Hair Gel: Water-based and designed for a stiff hold with a shiny finish, hair gel is ideal for structured styles like spikes or slicked-back looks.
- Hair Wax: Oil-based, offering a pliable hold with a matte finish. Hair wax is perfect for flexible, restylable, textured hairstyles.
- Hair Mousse: Foam-based and adds volume with a light to medium hold and a natural finish. If your hair lacks texture and appears flat, mousse is the way to go to revitalize your roots.
Dr. Deshmukh pointed out that hair gels are often the most damaging due to their high alcohol content, which can dry out and weaken your hair.
Shabaab, a hair expert at Looks Salon, noted that while hair wax is thicker, it is generally easier to apply than gel. He added, “Hair gel provides a stronger hold and a wet finish, whereas wax gives a matte texture.”
Which product is the most damaging to hair health?
Dr. Deshmukh indicated that hair gels pose the greatest risk due to their high alcohol content, which can dry and weaken hair. Hair wax is a close second, as it can cause buildup that clogs pores and weighs down hair. While hair mousse is typically less damaging, frequent use can still lead to dryness due to its alcohol content.
